SBC, Shoreham Baptist Church, is partnered with Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to offer debt counselling in our community. The service we offer is completely free to those who need it. CAP started helping people out of debt in 1996. With almost 300 CAP Debt Centres, in churches nationwide, we have helped thousands in financial difficulty.
The service is free and available to anyone, regardless of religious beliefs, race, nationality, age, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, or disability.
How CAP works
Home Visit
After you call CAP's new enquiries line on 0800 328 0006, a debt coach and support worker from the local CAP Debt Centre will visit you in your own home. (Or we can meet with you in our offices at Shoreham Baptist Church.)
An Effective Budget
Our trained debt counsellors will work out a realistic budget that prioritises your essential bills. Your local debt coach will then visit you again to explain the budget. They'll go through any options or choices you may have as you work your way out of debt, and what payments you need to make. If appropriate, our CAP HQ team will then negotiate affordable payments with each creditor, and stop interest and charges where possible.
CAP Account
If you choose to work with us, a CAP account is set up for you. This acts like a simple bank account and can be used to pay your regular bills and debts. You will need to make regular payments into your CAP account. CAP will then distribute this to cover your bills and debt repayments on your behalf. You can also make savings in your CAP account for irregular costs, (such as maintenance costs.)
