astronomy - partial solar eclipse
3rd Oct 2005 - a bright sunny day in Shoreham [if not in the rest of the country!]
We had a splendid view of that rare occurence - the solar eclipse. Admittedly it was not total, but it was impressive none-the-less. Near maximum, the air became noticeably cold and the light took on that almost blue sparkling tinge that I remember from the eclipse last millenium [heh - i've been waiting a while to be able to say that :-)]
NEVER EVER look directly at the sun, through binoculars or telescopes or in a magnifying glass!! The following pictures show the safe method of projecting the image.
[SAFETY FIRST]: projecting the eclipse onto card
using one arm of a pair of cheap binoculars
just after the start of the eclipse
about 1/2 of the way toward maximum eclipse
near maximum eclipse
